A Little Gypsy Jazz in India

March 30, 2012

Hampi, India, is best known for being the site of scores of ancient temples that are set among a surreal landscape of boulder-strewn hills. Its a popular place to hang out on the backpacker trail. Somehow, every roaming musician seems to end up at the same place in Hampi: The Tipi. Incredible jam sessions take place on a nightly basis at this gathering spot. While staying at the Tipi I had the good fortune to meet Rafael, a young French guitarist who shared my love of Django Reinhardt and Gypsy Jazz. This is a little clip of us playing the jazz standard "Minor Swing" by Django himself!

  1. WOW!!! I was rocking out in my house just now. That was soooo fun to listen to. You guys were great. Just one question... who is that guy in the background and more importantly, how can he just sit there without grooving to that incredible beat? :-) :-) I love seeing you enjoying life to its fullest! Abrazos, Juliana

  2. Cool man! Did you know that the Tipi guesthouse/ hostel was torn down last februari because it and a host of other places were deemed illegal by local authorities. People were kicked-out at 6 am and the place was bulldozed by 10. I was right there the morning it happened. The whole village felt weird afterwards.

  3. Remco, are you serious?!? That is intense. There must have been some serious political stuff going on in the background...

  4. Hi,
I loved the post and was hoping to spend my birthday this weekend in Hampi. However, I can’t seem to find a way to make a booking in the Tipi guest house online. It would be great if you could help me and let me know how you went about with the booking.

    Thanks and regards,
    Athmi

    1. I don't know if it still exists! Just go to Hampi, there is plenty of accommodation, no need to make a reservation!
